Pupil Premium
At Co-op Academy Smithies Moor, we believe that every child deserves the best possible start in life, regardless of their background or circumstances. The Pupil Premium is a special pot of funding provided by the government to help us make that a reality.
What is Pupil Premium?
It is additional funding given to state-funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and close the gap between them and their peers.
Think of it as a "boost" for our school budget that allows us to provide extra resources, staff, and opportunities that benefit the children who need them most.
Who is Eligible?
A child may be eligible for Pupil Premium funding if they:
-
Are currently eligible for Free School Meals (or have been at any point in the last 6 years).
-
Are "Looked After" or have previously been in local authority care.
-
Have a parent currently serving in the Armed Forces (this is known as the Service Pupil Premium).
How We Use the Funding
We use this money in a variety of ways to ensure every child has the support they need to succeed. This isn't just about extra books; it’s about the "whole child." Examples include:
-
Extra Teaching Support: Providing small group work or 1-to-1 tuition in reading, writing, or maths.
-
Wellbeing & Confidence: Funding SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) or nurture groups to help children feel happy and ready to learn.
-
Enrichment: Subsidising the cost of school trips, residential visits, or after-school clubs so no child misses out.
-
Resources: Providing specialised equipment, technology, or classroom tools to help remove barriers to learning.
Important Note for Parents in Reception, Year 1, and Year 2: Even though your child automatically receives a free school meal under the government’s "Universal" scheme, the school does not automatically receive Pupil Premium funding for them. We only receive this extra money if you are officially registered.
How Can You Help?
If you think your child might be eligible, please let us know. Even if you don’t want your child to take the free meal, registering allows the school to claim the funding, which directly benefits your child’s education and our school community.
All applications are handled with the utmost sensitivity and are strictly confidential.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Will my child be labelled or treated differently?
No. Children are never singled out or labelled because of Pupil Premium funding. Support is provided discreetly and as part of our normal classroom and school routines.
Will other parents or children know if we are registered?
No. All information is kept strictly confidential. Other families and pupils will not be aware if your child is eligible.
Do I have to take the free school meal to qualify?
No. You can register for Free School Meals purely so the school can receive Pupil Premium funding, even if your child prefers to bring a packed lunch.
What if my circumstances change?
Once registered, eligibility for Pupil Premium lasts for six years, even if your situation improves during that time. This provides stability and continued support for your child.
Does Pupil Premium only support academic learning?
No. While it supports learning in reading, writing, and maths, it is also used to support wellbeing, confidence, attendance, and enrichment opportunities such as trips and clubs.
Is this funding only for children who are struggling?
Not at all. Pupil Premium is about removing barriers and providing opportunities. It supports a wide range of needs, including helping children achieve their full potential.
Who can I speak to if I want more information or support with registering?
If you’d like help or have questions, please contact the school office. We are always happy to support you and talk things through in confidence.
